Ultrahigh vacuum surface structure and photochemistry

In the ultrahigh vacuum surface structure and photochemistry, we prepare a clean crystalline metal surface in a ultrahigh vacuum chamber and adsorb it with a gaseous molecule. The adsorption structure, reaction path and intermediates, and surface thermochemistry are studied using LEED/Auger, temperature programed desorption, and recently-added low energy Cs ion scattering. The laser-induced desorption or dissociation is monitored with time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Over the past years, we have studied at CO/W(111), t-butyl nitrite/Ag(111) and disilabutane/Si.

Nanomaterial growth and characterzation

In the nanomaterial growth and characterization, we synthesize electrochemically AAO nanoporous films to use as templates to grow nanomaterials. Au or Ag were deposited in a electrochemical way to form nanoislands, which can be used as corner stones to build further nano-network structures of self-assembly class of molecules. In a different experimental approach, the AAO is used as a mask for the laser-assisted deposition of metals. In this new approach, an array of metal dots, spheres, or rings were synthesized.

Nano-patterning by SPM lithography

We have developed a SPM lithography technique to pattern monolayer surfaces. In the conventional contact mode lithography, where an applied DC voltage on the AFM tip oxides a silicon surface to produce morphology change over the patterned area of the surface. In the tapping mode, the periodic applied voltage does not oxide the silicon surface but can oxide a functional group of the monolayer molecules on the silicon surface. We try to align DNA chains over the patterned area created by such lithographic methods.
